I live in Illinois. My 2013 NV200 was registered with light truck plates brand new at the dealer. A couple weeks ago, I traded it in for a 2016 NV200 at a different dealer. I wasn't paying attention and a few days later I realized it had passenger car plates.
I contacted the Sheriff's Dept for my county and he said indeed, a NV200 with no rear seats can't use passenger plates legally.
Now I am fighting with the dealer to re-register it with light truck plates.

That is going to be by state, mine has car plates in MD. Not sure how big a deal this is anymore, something like 1/2 the vehicles sold these days are trucks.

Have you talked to anyone at your local licensing office to see what they say?

Yeah it will differ state to state. In ohio "truck" plates are synonyms with commercial tags (allowing you to park in loading zones) and apparently if you are willing to pay the premium (and have a good enough reason) you can get them for a motorcycle!

Talk with the license bureau
